Beach Recommendations?

Main Post:

Just moved to Newport (Yay!) So many fabulous beaches to choose from... 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Kings, Easton, etc. I'd prefer later in the afternoon, not overly crowded, minimal (or no) seaweed, restrooms and eateries available. Which ones are your favorite? Thanks!

Top Comment: Easton is closest to restaurants like Flo's. If you're looking for minimal seaweed, Newport beaches are not great for that. We get red tide all the time. That said, there are parts of each beach which are OK depending on what the tides are doing. Crowds are absolutely going to be a thing in the summer at any of them, but late afternoon you'll be fine. I myself prefer 2nd beach. I'll roll up at 5 to get the free parking and on a nice weather day you'll still have plenty of sunshine.

Any good beaches around or north of Newport News for toddlers?

Main Post:

We are visiting Newport News in a few weeks and looking for a beach for toddlers to play on. I know there are beaches south but is there anything north?

Hoping those will be quieter than those near Virginia Beach.

Top Comment: Yorktown Beach. It's a river beach so no waves.

How bad is Newport News ?

Midtown or Hilton area are a bit safer than the "numbered" streets if it's in your budget. I've lived in the city a long time, it's not great but not as horrible as the rep imo.
